Uluslararası Sivil Havacılık Örgütü Nezdinde Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Daimi Temsilcisi Büyükelçi Çağatay Erciyes’in 29 Ekim Cumhuriyet Bayramı Resepsiyonunda Yaptığı Konuşma
ICAO HQ, Montreal
Mr. President, Mr. Secretary General,
Distinguished Representatives, Ambassadors,
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Ladies and Gentlemen
I would like to warmly welcome you all to our national day reception. We are delighted and honoured by your presence.
Please allow me to say a few words of greetings in Turkish to my compatriots before moving on to my speech.
Today, it is with great pride that we celebrate the 91st anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of Turkey all around the world.
In doing so, we always express our gratitude and appreciation to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and the first President of Turkey who laid down the political, legal, economic and social foundations of today’s modern Turkey. He was not only a great statesman, but also a great aviator, ahead of his time, when he said in the 1920’s ‘’the future is in the skies’’ Today his vision remains valid and relevant, and continues to guide the Turkish nation.
Our Republic has successfully fulfilled many accomplishments in the past 91 years. Allow me to briefly touch upon some of them in the field of civil aviation.
Turkish aviation sector has recorded a remarkable success with double-digit growth over the past decade. The catalyst was our Government’s strategic decision in 2003 to make aviation as the most preferred mode of transport in Turkey. We therefore reformed and restructured the entire aviation sector which created a competitive environment that promoted rapid and exponential growth.
Plus, Istanbul’s ideal geographic location has turned the city into an international aviation hub. 41 countries can connect Istanbul within 3 hours, 53 countries within 4 and 66 countries within 5 hours.
Today, Turkey ranks 12th worldwide in terms of Passenger Kilometres Performed on scheduled services.
Among our 13 national air carriers, Turkish Airlines flies to 264 destinations in 108 countries, more than any other airline in the world, and has been named yet again the best Airline in Europe for the 4th consecutive year.
Thanks to Turkish Airlines and the aviation sector in general. Without them, Turkey could not have been the 6th most visited holiday destination in the world with almost 38 million tourists a year. Speaking of Turkish Airlines, let me also thank them for co-sponsoring today’s reception.
To sustain our rapid development in aviation, we will double our aircraft passenger fleet and passenger capacity for all our airports by 2023. That is why we have started to build a third international airport in Istanbul, one that will be able to handle 150 million passengers annually. We plan to inaugurate the first phase of this mega project in October 2017.
To sustain development, Turkey will also expand liberalization, enhance aviation safety and security, ensure more efficient use of airspace and develop our human resources.
Of course ICAO is of key importance for the sustainable growth of our aviation sector. Given the remarkable performance and future goals of our aviation sector, we deem it fair and necessary to assume more responsibilities within ICAO, especially through Council membership.
We believe Turkey’s membership on the Council, after 66 years of absence, will enhance our contribution to the work of ICAO and complement our efforts in promoting regional cooperation.
Given our achievements, I have every reason to believe that Turkey’s candidacy to the ICAO Council will receive a worldwide support in 2016 elections.
Let me conclude by saying that, Turkey will spare no effort in supporting the strategic objectives of the Organization and will work closely with all countries and aviation partners to strengthen the safety, security, efficiency and the environmental sustainability of international civil aviation.
I thank you all once again for being with us today and sharing our joy in celebrating the 91st anniversary of our Republic.
